SWITZERLAND’S Robin Boeckli lifted the boys’ singles title in the International Junior Tennis Federation Championship for the “J60” category, and Britain’s Allegra Davies was crowned the girls’ singles winner, which brought down the curtain on the tournament yesterday at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) courts in Isa Town.
The top-seeded Boeckli outplayed his rival Egor Shcherbakov in the final, as he imposed his advantage in the first set by diversifying the strokes from the back line and advancing to the net, forcing the Russian to make more mistakes on his way to taking it 6-3.
The second set was no different from the first, as the Swiss player continued to impose his advantage and take the set with the same scoreline, 6-3, and with that the title.
In the girls’ singles final, the excitement and rivalry between Davies and France’s Cindy Langlais, saw the British player turn her loss in the first set into a precious victory winning the next two sets to claim the title.
The eighth-seeded Langlais began the first set strongly and was able to impose her dominance on her rival, who seemed very confused, causing her to lose many points, as the French girl took the set 6-3.
In the second set, the third-seeded Briton regained her composure and put in a great performance to win 7-6 (4).
The excitement mounted as the match extended to the decider, where the players battled it out before Davies took it 6-4 and, with it, the crown.
The winners and runners-up were presented with their medals by BTF secretary-general Fouad Al Ruwai’i and chief referee of the tournament Ahmed Al Hawaj.
