BOXING – Boxers from across the GCC put on a show last night in the Domestic Boxing Open Air Event, held in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd at The Dilmun Club in Saar.
The fight night, presented by the Bahrain Boxing Federation, celebrated local talent across various age groups and weight classes.
These leading fighters were able to gain some valuable time in the ring, while putting their prowess on display against tough opposition.
“Our boxers had a chance to show what they can do tonight,” Bahrain’s Olympic boxing coach Tony Davis told the GDN. “This event gave them an opportunity to box in front of such a large crowd and get some good experience.
“We had boxers at every level take part, from school boys and juniors, right up to the elite men.
“Overall, everyone enjoyed themselves, and most importantly, we were able to see these boxers try their best and get a little bit better.”
Bahrain’s talents used last night’s open-air event to particularly step up their preparations for the kingdom’s First National Championship, scheduled to be held from June 10 to 13 at Isa Sports City in Riffa.
The groundbreaking competition is to take place under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sport first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
“There’s quite a few of our participants tonight who train with me already, and this keeps their rhythm going, putting them in the ring and matching them up accordingly,” added Davis.
Last night’s Domestic Boxing Open Air Event was also an opportunity for coaches, judges, and referees to gain experience.
Courses for referees and judges were run to give them the opportunity to be officially certified for the upcoming International School Sports Federation Gymnasiade Bahrain 2024, to be hosted by the kingdom from October 23 to 31, in which boxing will be one of the multiple sports that will be held.
