Hundreds of children participated in a fun-filled pre-Eid celebration which included the ancient tradition of Hiya Biya, folk performances, storytelling and artistic activities for the little ones.
The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities organised a Hiya Biya event at Marassi Galleria Mall, Diyar Al Muharraq in an effort to preserve the annual custom.
A performance by Shabab Al Hidd Band ensued, followed by a storytelling session by iconic Bahraini kids’ actor Baba Yaseen, along with a colouring workshop and a face-painting corner.

Yesterday, families gathered on the beaches of Karbabad, Tubli, Arad Fort, Barbar, Nurana and Busaiteen to cast their Hiya Biyas into the sea.
Marking the end of the pilgrimage in Mecca and the Eid Al Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) children sing a song before throwing a small plant into the sea, waving it goodbye and at the same time wishing to go to Haj one day.
The ancient tradition, which may have roots in antiquity, is aimed at teaching young ones the joys of nurturing and patience.
