Relevant authorities have been directed to establish a comprehensive plan to redevelop the historical area of the Manama Suq.
The Cabinet said the plan must preserve its historical and cultural identity in line with infrastructure requirements needed in the area.
The directive came from His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, when he chaired the weekly meeting at Gudaibiya Palace yesterday.
It follows His Majesty King Hamad’s Royal Order to preserve the historical and cultural identity of Bahrain’s buildings and cities.
Manama Suq traders expressed joy at HRH Prince Salman’s directives.
They told our sister newspaper Akhbar Al Khaleej that it was the right decision at the right time after the recent suq fire.
They expressed hope that the redevelopment, which should be entrusted to highly qualified professionals, would also include the area gutted by the fire and the affected traders.
They felt that the Capital Governorate was the most appropriate authority to be in charge of the development, which should start as soon as possible.
They stressed the importance of the Manama Suq as a cultural, historic and tourist attraction and said the decision would serve Bahrain in the economic, tourist, cultural and historic spheres and benefit suq traders and property owners.
During the Cabinet meeting, ministers extended congratulations to His Majesty on the upcoming Hijri New Year 1446 AH, wishing Bahrain and all Arab and Islamic nations further progress and prosperity.
In line with the King’s directives and the kingdom’s presidency of the 33rd Arab Summit, the Cabinet recognised the importance of monitoring the recent developments and military escalation on the Lebanese-Israeli border.
The session stressed the imperative of avoiding military escalation and preventing the conflict from expanding in the region in order to safeguard Lebanon and achieve regional peace and stability.
The Cabinet emphasised the importance of relevant authorities to continue combating human trafficking in order to protect the rights of workers and employers and further solidify the kingdom’s position through developing labour market procedures. This follows Bahrain achieving Tier 1 ranking in the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report for the seventh consecutive year.
The Cabinet emphasised that this achievement reflects the visions and aspirations of the King and HRH Prince Salman to establish fairness and provide an environment that safeguards workers’ and employers’ rights.
