A UK street cleaner is living his best life on a free holiday in Portugal after his bosses blocked a £3,000(BD1,489) gift.
63-year-old Paul Spiers was supposed to be gifted £3,000 for a holiday after the town of Beckenham in southeast London organised a GoFundMe page for him.
Lisa Knight, who organised the GoFundMe page, said she met Mr Spiers in 2017. She said that he was adored by all and was an integral part of the town.
Mr Spiers had often said that he had only gone out of the country once, to Portugal, and that he wished to do it once again.
To aid in his dream, Knight set up the page and even managed to raise £3,000.
But at the last moment, there was a problem. Spiers' employers forbade him from accepting the money as it would be a breach of his contract with Bromley Council.
Once the story spread online, online travel agents On the Beach came in to assist. They announced that Spiers had won a "totally non-specific £3,000-holiday competition to Portugal."
The competition dictated that the winner had to be aged between 62-64, have the surname Spiers, be a street cleaner in Beckenham and "be loved by the local community".
Spiers is now in Faro, Portugal, in the same hotel he stayed at the last time, enjoying his holiday.
