FOUR men have been detained for catching 40kg of shrimps using banned bottom trawling nets in the sea off Bahrain’s northern coast.
This followed a report by the Coastguard to the Public Prosecution that a patrol had, on Saturday, spotted the Indian fishermen using the illegal equipment.
The accused tried to flee but were pursued, arrested and legal proceedings launched against them.
A further inspection of the boat revealed that no safety equipment was on board.
During interrogation, the men admitted to the charges against them, which included using bottom trawling nets, not turning on navigation lights, sailing without a licence, attempting to deny security personnel access to the boat, and not having any life jackets, first-aid kits or fire extinguishers on board.
The boat has been seized and investigations are underway to arrest other individuals in connection with the incident.
