Bahrain's main airport has the potential to turn into a leisure, entertainment and shopping facility rather than be just a place for travellers to pass through, councillors believe.
As a major entry point into the kingdom, Bahrain International Airport (BIA) could also become a place to promote local businesses and products.
Muharraq Municipal Council chairman Abdulaziz Al Naar says that the overarching goal of this transformation would be to turn the hub into a vibrant and multi-functional facility, with passengers and non-travelling visitors being able to experience world-class retail, dining and entertainment.
“The move aligns with Bahrain’s Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the economy, especially by bolstering the tourism and hospitality sectors,” he added.
“There is an emerging global trend to create destination airports that offer a unique blend of shopping, leisure and entertainment.
“Bahrain International Airport is aligning with this trend to boost tourism, improve passenger satisfaction and enhance the country’s status as a regional hub for travel and commerce.”
Mr Al Naar said modern travellers look for ways to relax and enjoy their time at airports, and BIA should aim to deliver this by incorporating state-of-the-art entertainment zones, spa and wellness centres and children’s play areas, amongst others.
“From gaming lounges for younger travellers to premium movie theatres, the airport will offer numerous ways to unwind while waiting for flights,” he suggested.
“Facilities that cater to wellness, including massage centres and gyms, aim to provide comfort and rejuvenation for long-haul travellers.
“Catering to families, dedicated play zones will help ensure that even the youngest travellers have a pleasant experience.”
He explained that retail is also one of the key pillars of the airport’s development strategy.
“The airport should be positioned as a premium shopping destination with a diverse range of retail outlets that go beyond typical duty-free stores,” said Mr Al Naar.
“From high-end fashion boutiques to renowned global brands, BIA needs to offer an extensive range of retail options to cater to different tastes and budgets.
“A significant focus should be on promoting local businesses and products that highlight the rich cultural heritage of Bahrain, giving travellers a chance to take a piece of the country home with them.
“Currently, there is only one local restaurant and limited space with shelves for productive families and businesses.”
He added that another way for airport to develop is through exclusive airport deals with special discounts and unique product ranges available only at BIA.
Meanwhile, the council’s technical committee chairman and airport area councillor Abdulqadir Al Sayed said BIA needs to curate an immersive entertainment experience within the terminal.
“This initiative should be aimed at both travellers and locals, who can enjoy the airport’s facilities without needing to fly,” he said.
“A key aspect of BIA’s transformation is a world-class dining zone that includes everything from fine-dining restaurants featuring international and regional cuisine to fast food outlets for a quick bite.
“Celebrity chef-led restaurants and Bahraini-inspired eateries could be part of this mix, showcasing Bahrain’s culinary excellence.”
He further elaborated that the airport’s central concourses could host live performances, art exhibitions, and cultural events, drawing visitors from both inside and outside Bahrain.
“By blending entertainment with retail and dining, BIA is poised to offer a holistic experience to visitors.”
Mr Al Sayed said another key aspect of BIA’s transformation plan is the integration of Bahrain’s cultural identity into the design and function of the airport.
“Through strategically placed art installations, architectural elements that reflect Bahraini heritage, and locally-themed retail offerings, the airport will become a space where passengers can begin to experience Bahrain’s rich history and traditions from the moment they arrive,” he said.
“Airlines and passengers need to view BIA as a desirable layover option, potentially turning a transit stop into an extended stay.
“The airport’s entertainment and retail facilities will encourage more tourists to visit Bahrain, further establishing it as a must-see destination in the Gulf region.”
He added that the airport’s expansion into retail and leisure will create new job opportunities, from retail positions to those in hospitality and entertainment services.
“Despite the exciting prospects, the project faces challenges such as competing with established regional hubs like Dubai and Doha or international airports like Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) International Airport or Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport,” said Mr Al Sayed.
“However, Bahrain’s strategic location, coupled with the personalised and unique experiences it aims to offer, could set BIA apart.
“Bahrain has the opportunity to capitalise on its boutique approach, providing more than just luxury but also cultural depth and intimacy.”
Mr Al Sayed said in the future, the success of BIA’s transformation could serve as a blueprint for other airports in the region looking to diversify their offerings.
“Bahrain’s vision for a world-class airport that blends convenience with culture, shopping and entertainment is a promising step toward modernising its travel infrastructure and attracting a new wave of visitors.”
