WEIGHTLIFTING – ACTION in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships 2024 gets underway today at a special venue put up in the vicinity opposite Bahrain National Theatre in Manama.
Lifters will be battling it out in two categories this evening, including the women’s 45kg A group and the men’s 55kg A division.
The women will get the proceedings underway at 5.30pm, and then the men will be competing from 8pm.
Eleven lifters will be going for gold in the women’s 45kg A class. They will be spearheaded by world record holder Hyon Sim Won of North Korea. Others participating include Jinhong Zhao of China, Cansu Bektas and Gamze Altun of Turkey, Dinh Thi Tham of Vietnam, Marta Garcia Rincon of Spain, Cicely Jevon Kyle of the US, Rosina Randafiarison of Madagascar, Maria Isabel Barco Ramirez of Mexico, Zi-Yu Hong of Chinese Taipei, and Mariangeli Irene Martinez Rosales of Venezuela.
Meanwhile, the men’s 55kg A competition will feature 14 competitors, led by defending world champion Lai Gia Thanh of Vietnam. Last year’s world silver-medallist Ngo Son Dinh, also of Vietnam, and bronze-medallist Natthawat Chomchuen of Thailand are also in the fray.
The rest of the start list includes Yang Yang of China, Rahimi Bin Sulaiman Muhammad of Malaysia, Thiago Felix Da Silva of Brazil, Angel Hriskov Rusev and Dzhan Zarkov of Bulgaria, Jose Manuel Poox Peralta of Mexico, Un Chol Pang of North Korea, Mansour Abdulrahim Al Saleem of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah Anbar Ahmed Basel of Yemen, Juan Antonio Barco Angel of Mexico, and Fernando Agad Jr of the Philippines.
The world championships are taking place under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sport chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Bahrain is represented by Paris 2024 Olympics bronze medallist Gor Minasyan in the men’s over-109kg A category, Ahmed Hasan Nesaif in the men’s 73kg C class, and Zainab Ali Yusuf Yahya in the women’s 71kg C category.
Nesaif will be in action on Monday, Zainab on Wednesday, and Minasyan on the competition’s final day on December 15.
