A Bahraini organisation brought hope and relief to children, families and individuals in urgent need this Ramadan, delivering life-changing support to those facing critical and often overwhelming circumstances ... including a mother of 12 who required urgent surgery.
Beneficiaries also included children with special needs and families living in unsafe or damaged homes, among others.
A total of BD17,204 was allocated for physical therapy, special needs assistance, support for the deaf community, and a critical surgical procedure, while BD24,000 was dedicated to essential home renovation projects.
Our Responsibility’s founder Rayana Sayyar told the GDN about one of the campaign’s most emotional cases – a mother of 12 who urgently needed spinal surgery.
“She was living in constant pain and struggling to move, yet she continued to care for her family every single day,” Ms Sayyar said. “Without surgery, her condition would have worsened and her children would have faced an uncertain future.”
The registered organisation also extended support to members of the deaf community by providing specialised hearing devices.
“For many individuals, these devices are not just equipment – they are their connection to the world,” Ms Sayyar said, explaining that the devices allow users to hear their families, attend school and participate confidently in daily life.
She highlighted that their renovation projects remain among the most urgent and emotionally impactful cases the organisation handles, as they directly affect the safety and wellbeing of families.
“Our last two renovation projects came to us through concerned community members who could not ignore what they saw,” Ms Sayyar said. “Families were living in unsafe conditions, with damaged structures, leaking ceilings and environments no child should endure.
“After careful verification and assessment, we mobilised support. Thanks to the funds raised, we are now able to restore these homes and provide something many take for granted – safety, stability and peace of mind.”
Most beneficiaries are children and families living in Bahrain, representing diverse nationalities and backgrounds.
Many of the children are aged between four and 18, including orphans. In one case, an orphaned university student was at risk of discontinuing their education due to unpaid tuition fees.
“With the support of our community, we were able to cover the costs and allow the student to continue their education, protecting not just their future, but their independence,” Ms Sayyar explained.
She emphasised the strong community spirit behind the initiative, noting that contributions – whether large or small – carry equal significance.
Transparency, she added, is central to the organisation’s work.
“Funds are not given directly to us. Payments are made straight to hospitals, rehabilitation centres, universities and other service providers,” she explained. “This ensures trust and guarantees that support reaches those who need it most.”
She also explained that members of Our Responsibility conduct home visits to interview applicants, allowing them to better understand each family’s circumstances.
During Ramadan, the group also helped settle debts, distributed food to families in need and organised special Eid initiatives for children.
While the organisation typically takes orphaned children on outings during Eid, this year they adapted their plans.
“Instead, we created a full programme within the orphanage, featuring food, games, activities, entertainment booths and the distribution of Eidiya,” Ms Sayyar said. “The children’s laughter reminded us that joy can still exist, even in difficult times.”
Children were also provided with new clothing to celebrate the occasion.
Last month, the group launched an official website aimed at making it easier for individuals and families in Bahrain to access financial support. The platform also enables donors to contribute to a variety of causes, including medical treatment, education, food assistance and housing renovations.
What began as an Instagram page in 2023 has since evolved into a fully established non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting orphans, vulnerable children and families across Bahrain.
