A police officer was allegedly hit by a car driven by a notorious Bahraini villain and suffered a broken leg at the scene of a dramatic arrest attempt, a court heard.
An ex-convict, who has previously been found guilty of armed robbery, rape, fraud, soliciting prostitution, drug use and assaulting civil servants, has once again landed in court.
The 48-year-old has denied injuring the police officer who was part of a team trying to arrest him on suspicion of selling methamphetamine.
The impact of the collision reportedly broke his leg. The 28-year-old suffered a fracture to his tibia, according to the medical examiner’s report, and the injury was designated a five per cent disability.
The injured officer testified that he was dispatched to the defendant’s Salihiya home after obtaining a warrant from the Public Prosecution to arrest him on charges of using and trading in narcotics. The driver was further charged with assaulting two other policemen.
The police had declared their identities to the defendant, when he jumped into a car. The court heard the team was ‘shocked’ when he suddenly reversed the vehicle, ramming into a patrol car and hitting a Bahraini officer who had stood his ground.
During the drama, one of the three policemen managed to open the passenger door and jump in next to the defendant. He was reportedly punched in the shoulder, chest and back as well as being threaten with a sharp object but was able to subdue the driver before he was able to afflict any further harm.
The Public Prosecution urged judges to give the defendant the maximum possible sentence, noting that he had most recently served a spell behind bars for robbery.
His criminal record shows that in 2003 he was sentenced to 13 years in prison for robbing a woman and raping her. On top of fraud, drug use and assault convictions, the man also had a history of having started fights in prison and destroying property.
High Criminal Court judges will issue a verdict in the case on Tuesday .
