A notorious Bahraini villain, with a history of convictions including armed robbery, rape, fraud, soliciting prostitution, drug use and assault, is facing life in prison after careering a car into a police officer.
The 48-year-old was sentenced to 25 years at the High Criminal Court yesterday after leaving his victim writhing in agony suffering from a broken left leg and multiple fractures.
The 28-year-old police officer needed to undergo an operation, the court heard, with screws and pins used to set the damage. It helped stabilise his condition although he continues to suffer chronic ankle pain and a medical report detailed a five per cent permanent disability.
The driver was also found guilty of assaulting two other officers.
A police squad was sent to his Salihiya home on a July afternoon to arrest him on suspicion of selling methamphetamine. The officers, dressed in reflective coats, had declared their police identities, when he jumped into a car owned by his brother.
The court heard that he suddenly reversed the vehicle, ramming into the patrol car and hitting the Bahraini officer.
New details about the incident were revealed during yesterday’s hearing, including the fact that the fugitive managed to initially get away but was later tracked down to an empty field near a farm in Zinj.
Police waited patiently for him to leave the vehicle and in the early hours, he finally got out. When officers swooped to arrest him, he jumped back into the Honda Accord and tried to drive away again.
This time, two determined officers managed to enter the vehicle, one from the passenger’s side and one from the driver’s side. The Bahraini brandished a razor blade at them but he was ultimately subdued and arrested.
Because of his record – which included a 10-year-old robbery sentence and 13 years for attacking and stealing from a female victim – judges stated that his criminal history acted as an aggravating circumstance when recording the life sentence from his latest offences.
Court documents also stated that it was not the thug’s first time evading arrest, nor his first time assaulting police.
