Austrian traveller of Iraqi origin Thaer Aboud has arrived in Bahrain, the 28th stop of his journey on foot, which began about six years and eight months ago.
“I have been able to walk around 35,000km and my next destinations will be Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and Oman, he told our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej during a visit to its premises.
Speaking about his adventures, Mr Aboud said that the thought came to him in 2013 after his sister discovered that she had breast cancer and was terrified of dying.
“I told her stories from The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night in an attempt to lift her spirits and help her forget her illness.
This led me to practise the walking sport. In 2018, the concept became clear to me, and I set out from the very north of Europe – more precisely, the North Cape in Norway – to the far south of the African Continent. I had to cross this distance on foot,” he added.
He praised Bahrain as an oasis of peace and security, and commended its citizens for their tolerance, kindness and hospitality.
He praised Bahrain’s landmarks, including Manama Suq, which, he said, reminded him of his childhood in Baqubah, Iraq, before immigrating to Europe and settling in Austria in 1979.
