I LOVE my life as an English expatriate woman in the beautiful Kingdom of Bahrain, am now retired and have lived in Hamala for the past 14 years. However, I feel compelled to speak up about two pressing issues related to the very real dangers posed by the appalling driving standards we are all, unfortunately, too familiar with: drivers unabashedly using mobile phones, speeding and aggressively pushing slower cars out of the way, especially on the highways...
Yesterday morning you published a report featuring the death of yet another delivery driver in this area – the second in as many days. A life snuffed out, earning his living bringing food to those who indulge in home deliveries, as they do in the height of summer. Drivers, please – while we know that some delivery drivers drive erratically, due to a lack of road safety skills, and impossible deadlines, could we adopt the simple but effective maxim: “Think once, think twice, think bike” when changing lanes?
Of even greater urgency is the matter of the sudden removal of two speed bumps over a year ago, which were positioned just before and after the entrance to our compound, housing more than 100 residents. Since their removal, all traffic passing the compound can – and does – speed by unchecked. This has resulted in several accidents, flipped cars and even lampposts and cyclists being knocked over. Yet despite multiple complaints from many residents through all available channels, the speed bumps have not been replaced.
Sadly, the official Tawasul app appears to be run by AI, as my own complaint has been repeatedly rotated through various authorities, each time generating automated text messages and emails, registering my complaint, before being marked as “closed” – without any action being taken.
I am now resorting to writing to the GDN in the hope that someone in authority can not only “look into the matter”, as has been repeatedly promised, but actually DO something about it – before someone is killed?
