Bahrain's elite athlete Eunice Chebichii Chumba bagged the bronze medal in this year’s Nagoya Women’s Marathon, held in Nagoya, Japan.
The event was a Platinum-level World Athletics Label Road Race.
Chumba competed amongst a high-quality field of world-class runners from all over the world.
She claimed her top-three finish in a time of two hours 21 minutes 35 seconds – just a minute behind race winner Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya, who clocked a mark of 2:20:240.
Sayaka Sato of Japan was the runner-up in 2:20:59. Her compatriots Mao Uesugi (2:22:11) and Rika Kaseda (2:23:05) were fourth and fifth, respectively, while completing the top eight were Isobel Batt-Doyle of Australia in 2:23:29, Natosha Rogers of the US in 2:23:51, and Leanne Pompeani, also of Australia, in 2:24:53.
The race was the first for Chumba this year. The 31-year-old’s finishing time was more than a minute from her personal best of 2:20:02, which she clocked in a race in South Korea in 2022.
The former Asian Games and World Military Games champion is one of the kingdom’s top distance-running specialists. She is aiming to be a part of the Bahrain team that will be going for gold in this year’s World Athletics Championships this September in Tokyo, Japan.
