One of the underground tunnels at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) leading from the vending area to the paddock got a contemporary art revamp in time for the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.
In partnership with the Rashid Al Khalifa Art Foundation (RAK), the BIC commissioned a large-scale public art installation at the BIC Media Tunnel.
“As part of its ongoing efforts to support local artists and bring art into everyday spaces, the RAK Art Foundation invited two leading Bahraini graffiti artists – Mahmood Al Sharqawi, known as Huvil, and Mustafa Al Halwachi – to transform more than 60 meters of wall space with original murals,” a RAK spokesperson explained.
“The result is a series of vibrant artworks that blend traditional Bahraini heritage with elements of modern pop culture.
“Though each artist brings a distinct style to the project, their works collectively offer a cohesive visual narrative that bridges past and present, local identity and global influence.
“The installation not only enriches the visual experience for media personnel and visitors at the circuit, but also reflects a broader vision of integrating art into public and unexpected settings.”
Huvil began his career in 2007 and is known for incorporating Arabic phrases and calligraphic motifs into his graffiti.
Mr Al Halwachi is recognised for his large-scale murals around Bahrain, including works at Bahrain Bay and The Merchant House Hotel. His practice is characterised by the use of calligraphy and traditional patterns, through which he explores emotional expression and pays homage to sacred forms.
This collaboration marks the beginning of what both institutions hope will be a series of future initiatives aimed at expanding the cultural footprint of Bahrain’s public spaces.
