A series of competitions aimed at preserving Bahraini heritage and strengthening national identity will get underway later this month in Manama.
The new Mawrooth Traditional Games, being organised by Bahrain Inherited Traditional Sports Committee (Mawrooth), will be held at the Bab Al Bahrain’s Post Museum from April 27 to May 7.
It comes as part of efforts to revive traditional games that once played a central role in the lives of the Bahraini community.
Events will feature games considered to be part of the kingdom’s cultural legacy and reflect the spirit of co-operation, joy and simplicity that once characterised local society.
Traditional games will include Dama (checkers), Dominoes, Doubles Carrom, Kot 6 and Hand (Rummy).
Participants of all ages are being invited to compete in what is expected to be a lively atmosphere where players can showcase their skills.
Mawrooth organising committee head Ebrahim Ahmed stated that the event aligns with the committee’s strategy to revitalise traditional Bahraini games and reintroduce them to society in a way that resonates with modern generations.

“The committee believes in the importance of connecting the past with the present through heritage events,” he said.
“We are aiming to make this championship a platform that combines entertainment and education, while preserving this important aspect of Bahraini heritage.
“Bab Al Bahrain’s Post Museum was carefully selected for its historical and cultural symbolism, making it the perfect location to host an event that targets all segments of society.”
Those interested in participating are being invited to register through the official event website www.almawrooth.org.
Participation is open to everyone, with expectations of strong turnout from fans of traditional games and those passionate about Bahraini heritage.
Each player will have to pay a BD3 registration fee. Additionally, participants are required to wear traditional Bahraini outfits.
People will be allowed to register in one contest only in order to ensure there are no clash of timings.
Participants are also being urged to ensure that they arrive on time to the events. Anybody who is more than 10 minutes late faces disqualification.
If any unexpected changes arise, and they are unable to participate in the contests, they are required to contact the committee within 24 hours and inform them.
Individuals or groups who are caught cheating or flaunting the rules will also be disqualified without exception.
As for spectators, the committee is urging both viewers and participants to keep their phones on silent for the duration of the game. Smoking will also be strictly prohibited.
Earlier this year, Mawrooth had organised a successful series of events including the 10th edition of the Nasser bin Hamad Falconry and Hunting Season.
It also recently held the ‘Mawrooth School’ camp, which aimed to instil a love for Bahraini traditions and heritage in youngsters and introduce them to the country’s desert culture.
