Muharraq clinched the Khalifa Bin Salman Basketball Cup after defeating Manama 89-86 in the final at Khalifa Sport City last night.
The winners staged a comeback in the second half after trailing by seven points (41-48) at the interval.
Myron Gordon paced Muharraq with 30 points. Mohammed Nasser (13 points), Mohammed Ameer (12), Tony Mitchell (11) and Ali Husain Ali were the other players to score in double digits.
Tony Carr top-scored for Manama with 28 points.
Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) vice president Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa presented Muharraq Club with the trophy.
The final was attended by senior international basketball figures, including Shaikh Saud bin Ali Al Thani, president of the International Basketball Federation (Fiba), and Major General Ismail Al Gergawi, president of the Arab Basketball Federation.
Shaikh Isa congratulated Muharraq on winning the title and commended the players’ strong performance, as well as the efforts of the club’s management, technical, and administrative staff in preparing the team for the season and claiming the title. He also commended Manama Club for their strong performance and sportsmanship.
The final coincided with the Fiba Congress and Hall of Fame ceremony, highlighting Bahrain’s growing profile in hosting major sporting events.
Fiba president Shaikh Saud arrived in Bahrain earlier yesterday, accompanied by a delegation including board member Jorge Joaquin and Fiba Foundation president Hamane Niang.
They were received at Bahrain International Airport by BOC secretary general Faris Al Kooheji.
Al Kooheji welcomed the Fiba president and conveyed to him the greetings of Supreme Council for Youth and Sport first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman and BOC president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa. He praised the efforts of Shaikh Saud in promoting basketball around the world, expressing his pride in Bahrain hosting the Fiba Congress and the Hall of Fame ceremony, wishing him a pleasant stay in Bahrain.
Shaikh Saud expressed his gratitude to Bahrain for its hospitality and warm welcome, expressing his appreciation for the role played by the BOC in supporting and developing basketball. He also commended the efforts made by the Bahrain Basketball Federation in hosting the Fiba Congress and the Hall of Fame ceremony, wishing Bahrain continued progress and prosperity.
