HORSERACING – ADRESTIA, owned by Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, claimed a fantastic victory yesterday at Royal Ascot in the UK.
The Simon and Ed Crisford-trained three-year-old, competing for KHK Racing Ltd, won the class two Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes, held over a five-furlong distance.
Ridden by jockey Oisin Murphy, Adrestia was in touch of the front early on in the ride and then pressed the leader over one furlong out. The victor then powered ahead inside the last furlong, and ran on well to the finish to win in 58.21 seconds.
Adrestia finished with a length’s gap from runner-up Hammer The Hammer, racing for owner B T McDonald.
Adrestia led four Bahrain-owned contenders in the top six of the 24-horse race classification. Al Mohamediya Racing’s Redorange claimed third for trainer Clive Cox and jockey Rossa Ryan. Zayer finished fourth for owners Ebrahim Al Afoo, trainer Archie Watson, and jockey Hollie Doyle, while Mearall was sixth for Mohamediya, Richard Fahey, and Shane Gray.
Adrestia’s victory was the second at this year’s Royal Ascot festival for Shaikh Khalid’s KHK Racing Ltd.
Earlier, My Cloud, trained by Roger Varian and ridden by Silvestre De Sousa, won the class two Royal Hunt Cup.
Following yesterday’s result, Shaikh Khalid, who is the Supreme Council for Youth and Sport (SCYS) first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee president, congratulated His Majesty King Hamad, and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, as well as His Majesty’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and SCYS chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa on the victory.
