Royal Court Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa chaired the second meeting of the committee for the selection of members of the board of commissioners of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR).
Shaikh Khalid commended the interest shown by many citizens in applying for membership of the board of commissioners of the NIHR.
He noted that their commitment to human rights and representation of different parts of society reflects a genuine desire to support and promote human rights in Bahrain.
This effort is in line with the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad and his dedication to upholding human rights, promoting the values of humanity, justice, unity and peace, and ensuring Bahrain’s full compliance with international laws and agreements.
The minister emphasised that the committee adhered to the highest standards of transparency in reviewing and categorising all submitted applications, ensuring they met the required candidacy qualifications and standards.
This process was conducted following the conditions and criteria for the establishment of the NIHR, and in line with Royal Order (17) of 2017 concerning the provisions for appointing members of the board of commissioners.
The selection also complied with the Paris Principles related to the status of national institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights, which were endorsed by United Nations General Assembly Resolution (48/134), dated December 20, 1993.
Furthermore, the process took into account the general comments issued by the sub-committee on accreditation within the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), which are regarded as authoritative interpretative references for the Paris Principles.
Shaikh Khalid noted that the final list of proposed names for membership of the board of commissioners will be submitted to His Majesty for the issuance of the order appointing them for the 2025-2029 term.
