In a new trend, Moroccan men and women have started having 'Divorce parties', a celebration of new beginnings that aims to remove the stigma of divorce, especially for women.
A recent viral party featured a cake with 'divorced and proud' written on it, in an atmosphere of laughter and singing.
"The celebration represents a deep cultural and societal shift where divorce, especially for women, is no longer viewed as a personal and social failure, but as a chance to be free and rebuild," said Dr Fouad Palmir, a sociology researcher, in a statement.
He also emphasised that this new trend has roots in ancient Moroccan traditions, where a small party would be hosted when a woman returns to her family after a divorce.
