OpenAI plans to make its debut in the animated film industry with an AI-animated, feature-length film.
The film 'Critterz' will be created primarily using the company’s AI tools, including DALL-E, Sora, and GPT-5, and is expected to hit theatres worldwide in 2026, following a planned debut at the Cannes Film Festival.
It is based on the 2023 AI-animated short of the same name, featuring fantastical woodland creatures and satirising nature documentaries. The film is a partnership between Vertigo Films and Native Foreign, a creative agency and production company that specialises in AI storytelling.
'Critterz' is reportedly being made on a budget of less than $30 million in just nine months, a fraction of the cost compared to the $100m-$250m required for blockbuster animated features.
OpenAI is hoping the film can convince Hollywood executives to utilise AI in future projects
