ATHLETICS – BAHRAIN’S superstar sprinter Salwa Eid Naser is back on track today at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo, Japan.
The 2019 world champion will be running in the women’s 400m semi-finals, which is set to feature three races. She will be amongst an eight-athlete field in the second, which is scheduled for a 3.15pm start, Bahrain time.
Naser powered into this stage with a sensational first-round performance, where she won her heat with the round’s fastest time of 49.13s.
She continues to be a favourite to reach the final, which will be held on Thursday. Only the top two women from each of the three semis heats, plus the two fastest losers, will make it through to the medal event.
Naser will be going up against a high-quality field in her race. Her competitors include Victoria Ohuruogu from the UK, Printassia Johnson from the Bahamas, Mercy Andongo Oketch from Kenya, Isabella Whittaker from the US, Stacy Ann Williams from Jamaica, Lieke Klaver from the Netherlands, and Roxana Gomez from Cuba.
Reigning world and Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino from the Dominican Republic will be headlining the first race, while topping the heat three start list is Briton Amber Anning.
Naser is aiming to secure the fourth world medal of her glittering career in Tokyo. She also won the 400m silver medal at the 2017 worlds, before claiming her world title in 2019, when she also clinched a bronze medal as part of Bahrain’s 4x400m mixed relay team.
