I have always been someone who was hesitant about pets. I could never understand the fascination with having animals in the house, particularly dogs. They seemed like a lot of work, and I didn’t think I had the energy or time to look after one.
My life was already busy and chaotic and the idea of adding another responsibility seemed overwhelming.
I had a friend who occasionally brought her dog home and the pet reminded me of what I thought I didn’t need!
However, a few months ago, I was forced to adopt the dog after she had to leave the country for good. She convinced me to just try keeping her for a few days and if it didn’t work out well, I could entrust her to someone else.
After two or three sleepless nights, I reluctantly agreed.
Peppy came home. It wasn’t a decision I made lightly and I never anticipated that this act would completely transform my life.
For the first couple of days, she was reluctant to engage with me, she would stay in a corner, eat the food and lie down. I wondered if she was depressed and lonely. I bought a few toys for her and she slowly started playing with them.
A week passed by.
Initially, I struggled with the responsibility. I wasn’t used to a being who relied on me for everything – food, shelter, exercise, affection. I found that daunting. There were moments of frustration and confusion as I adjusted to this new dynamic.
But soon, I realised there were also moments of joy – her tail wagging furiously when I came home, the way she would nuzzle me when I felt down, and the simple, quiet companionship we shared every day.
Over time, I realised that Peppy – who had come into my life somewhat unexpectedly—had given me a new perspective.
She reminded me of the value of simple moments. There’s a kind of peace that comes from walking her in the park or playing with her after a hectic day. I had always been so focused on deadlines and checking things off my to-do list. But she taught me how to be present, how to enjoy the little things, and to find happiness in the quietest of moments.
She also gave me a sense of purpose. Caring for her meant that I had to adjust my routine and be more mindful of my time.
There’s something incredibly grounding about the bond between a dog and their owner. It’s not based on expectations or perfection; it’s simply about love, trust and companionship.
Now, I cannot imagine my life without her. She’s become more than just a pet.
She’s brought a new sense of fulfilment and has taught me to be more patient, more present, and more compassionate.
I’ve come to understand why people say that adopting a pet changes everything. It does. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I’m so grateful to have her by my side. And so thankful to my friend who gave her to me.
