WEIGHTLIFTING – The first medals of the weightlifting competitions in the third Asian Youth Games were won yesterday at Exhibition World Bahrain.
Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa was on hand for the events, alongside Olympic Council of Asia standing committee chair Prince Fahad bin Jalawi bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and International Weightlifting Federation president Mohammed Jalood, among other officials.
Jinfu Jiang from China won the gold medal for total in the boys’ 56kg category with a new Asian youth record of 251kg.
Kyong Song Pak (248kg) from North Korea was the silver-medallist and Jay-R Colonia (248kg) from the Philippines took the bronze for totals.
Pak won gold for the snatch with a 112kg lift, Hoshina Ameku from Japan won silver also at 112kg, and The Hung Van from Vietnam claimed snatch bronze at 111kg.
In clean and jerk, Jiang bagged gold with a 141kg lift, Mohammed Nawaf Al Ojaian from Saudi Arabia took the silver at 138kg, while Colina claimed bronze at 137kg.
Meanwhile, in the boys’ 60kg competition, Xunfa Chen claimed the gold for total at 261kg.
Maharajan Arumugpandian from India was the silver-medallist with a 256kg aggregate, while Muhamad Rijal Abdilah from Indonesia took the bronze at 250kg.
Chen captured the snatch gold with a 120kg lift, Arumugpandian took silver at 114kg, and Ayu Higa from Japan claimed bronze at 110kg. Abdilah then won the clean and jerk gold with a 143kg effort.
He beat Arumugpandian by a single kg, while Chen took bronze at 141kg.
On the distaff yesterday, Priteesmita Bhoi from India won the gold medal for total in the girls’ 44kg competition with a 158kg mark.
Jihong Wu from China took silver at 156kg, while Yen Dao Thi from Vietnam clinched bronze at 141kg.
Wu also won gold for snatch with a 68kg lift, while Bhoi took silver at 66kg and Dao Thi bronze at 64kg.
In clean and jerk, Bhoi captured the gold with a 92kg effort, Wu won silver at 88kg, and Princess Jay Ann Diaz from the Philippines clinched bronze at 78kg.
Weightlifting in this year’s Asian Youth Games continues today. Bahrain’s Hussain Dawood Abdulla is in action in the boys’ 65kg Group B.
