SWIMMING – HONG Kong bagged three gold medals yesterday to headline the list winners in the swimming competitions on the penultimate day of action in the third Asian Youth Games.
Gilaine Ma, Wui Kiu Man, and Yik Ki Tsui all triumphed in their respective events, held at Khalifa Sports City’s Olympic-sized pool in Isa Town.
Ma triumphed in the girls’ 200 metres freestyle final in a new Asian Youth Games record of two minutes 00.98 seconds. Man claimed the girls’ 100m breaststroke gold medal in 1:10.51; while Tsui won the boys’ 100m breaststroke title in another Asian Youth Games record of 1:02.09.
In Tsui’s race, Bahrain’s Miron Boldovskii was a participant. He became the kingdom’s only swimmer so far to advance from the preliminary round heats.
Boldovskii made it out of the opening phase by clocking the sixth-fastest time of 1:05.25 amongst the 36 competing swimmers in five heats. Then, in the medal round, he finished a solid seventh in a time of 1:05.55.
Elsewhere yesterday, also coming away with gold were Seungwoo Ko from South Korea in the boys’ 200m freestyle, Alexandr Rumynskiy from Kazakhstan in the boys’ 100m backstroke, Mingxia Sun from China in the girls’ 100m backstroke, and the Chinese quartet of Sun, Yiming Luo, Siyao Li, and Yushuguang He in the mixed 4x100m medley relay.
Present to award the medallists their accolades last night during the podium ceremonies were Bahrain Olympic Committee secretary general Faris Al Kooheji and Bahrain Aquatics president Abdullah Atiya.
