CYCLING – ABDULAZIZ Saleh Al Hammari took the overall victory yesterday in the first stage of the fifth Nasser Bin Hamad Cycling Tour for Amateurs.
The event features wide participation from cyclists representing the Bahrain, GCC countries, and expatriates living in the kingdom. The event is organised by the Bahrain Cycling Association in cooperation with Faalyat Company and runs until Saturday.
Yesterday’s six-kilometre opening leg was an individual time trial.
Al Hammari came away with three jerseys after the first day: the yellow jersey for the overall leader in the Bahraini amateurs category sponsored by Bapco Energies, the red jersey for the points leader sponsored by Beyon, and the blue jersey for the under-23 category sponsored by Marassi Galleria. The green jersey for the over-40 category went to Aqeel Thamer, sponsored by Al Salam Bank.
Organising committee head Ahmed Al Haj awarded the winners of the stage. Finishing behind Al Hammari amongst Bahraini amateurs was Mohammed Hassan Jawad, while Mohammed Isa Al Ghais came third.
Meanwhile, in the race’s category for GCC riders, Bahrain national team members, and residents, Hilal Jaber won the first stage, followed by David Bessey in second place and Saeed Salem in third.
Jaber thus claimed the orange jersey as this division’s overall leader, sponsored by Bapco Energies and the grey jersey for the points classification, sponsored by Beyon.
The pink jersey for the over-40 category went to David Bessey, sponsored by Al Salam Bank, while the purple jersey for the under-23 category went to Mahdi Hassan Jawad, sponsored by Marassi Galleria.
The second stage of the tour will be held today in Sakhir over a distance of 65 kilometres, starting at 2.30pm.
