Bahrain Olympic Committee board member and Committee on Equal Opportunities and Gender Balance in Sports chairperson Dr Shaikha Hessa bint Khalid Al Khalifa has been appointed Union of Arab National Olympic Committees vice-president, representing the women’s category.
Her election is further affirmation of the distinguished status of Bahraini women, and it comes as a result of the confidence she receives from her fellow candidates, reflecting the high esteem she commands at the Arab level.
The appointment was made during the union’s general assembly held on Saturday night in Riyadh under the chairmanship of Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee president and Saudi’s Sports Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal Al Saud.
Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty King Hamad and Supreme Council for Women president, sent a cable of congratulations to Dr Shaikha Hessa on her appointment.
She said the appointment adds to the record of achievements of Bahraini women, who continue to represent the kingdom with excellence under the leadership of His Majesty.
Dr Shaikha Hessa expressed that this honourable trust is a reflection of the support extended by His Majesty and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for enabling Bahraini talent to assume leading positions in the sports sector.
She also affirmed that this achievement is the result of the continued support of Princess Sabeeka, in addition to the guidance of the King’s humanitarian work and youth affairs representative and Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS) chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and SCYS first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
