HORSERACING – PHOENIX Passion won the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co (GPIC) Cup last night at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
In attendance yesterday were REHC High Committee honorary president Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Supreme Council for Environment vice-president and REHC High Committee vice-chairman Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid Al Khalifa, and other officials.
Phoenix Passion triumphed in the sixth event on yesterday’s nine-race card. The four-year-old gelding took first place after 2,200m for owners Al Mohamediya Racing and trainer Fawzi Nass, with jockey Hussain Asghar in the saddle. They claimed the lion’s share of the BD3,000 prize.
King Of the Throne was second for Al Afoo Racing, Jaber Ramadhan, and Mirko Sanna. Glen Savage came third for Al Mallah Racing, Abduljaleel Al Mallah, and Abdulrahim Jasim, while Laser Guided took fourth place for Victorious Forever, Yousif Taher, and Ebrahim Nader.
Meanwhile, Chandigah lifted the GPIC Maidens Cup in yesterday’s third race at REHC. Competing for Al Sharq Racing and Mahmood Jawad, Mark Lawson rode the four-year-old colt to the victory after 1,400m for the biggest portion of the BD3,000 total prize.
Anwaar was the runner-up for Mohamediya, Ali Abdulmajeed, and Hasan Al Saffar, while Shield Wall came third for Shaikh Isa bin Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa, Abdulla Kuwaiti, and Jasim. Tolerance completed the top four for Abduljalil Salman Hasan, Talal Al Alawi, and Nader.
In the day’s ninth and final race, The Blue Lady took the GPIC Sprint Cup for M and E Racing, Paul Smith, and Lee Newman. Run over a 1,200m straight with BD2,000 in winnings, The Blue Lady triumphed ahead of Retaj, competing for Al Meshqab Racing, Osama Hashim, and Al Saffar. Illuminate came third for Victorious Forever, Smith, and Hasan Asghar, while Najran was fourth for Shaikh Hamad bin Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, Robert McDowell, and Lawson.
Also yesterday, Rawyaan won the Late Abdulhadi Al Afoo Cup, run over 1,400m with a BD3,000 prize. The six-year-old gelding was ridden by Jasim, and took first place for owner Hasan Emad Hasan and trainer Ali Jan.
Athan came second for Gulf Racing Club, Nass, and Stephane Ladjadj; Burdett was third for Al Afoo, Jan, and Nader; and Pedro Valentino came fourth for Mohamediya, Mohamed Hasan, and Hussain Asghar.
Elsewhere last night, Kuheilan Al Adiyat 1894 won race one for Victorious Forever, Taher, and Jasim; Call Me Maybe took race two for Talal Reyadh Al Haji, Ramadhan, and Sanna; Knight triumphed in race five for Al Wadi Racing, Ramadhan, and Alberto Sanna; Miss Yvonne won race six for Mohamediya, Abdulmajeed, and Hussain Asghar; and Sinjar took race eight for Shaikh Salman bin Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa, Kuwaiti, and Alberto Sanna.
