RECENTLY, we were all discussing the growing issue of stray dogs in Bahrain. That conversation stayed in my mind and it reminded me of something profound, something I experienced just a month ago.
We often say that dogs are unique creatures, capable of loving unconditionally. But sometimes, life gives you a moment that proves it in the most beautiful way.
During my visit to Gabala, Azerbaijan, I came across a dog I will never forget. She wasn’t anyone’s pet. She had no collar, no home, no master. Yet, the moment I softly called out to her, she walked towards me with such innocence and trust, as though she had been waiting for someone to notice her.
Her eyes … they weren’t just eyes. They were full of warmth, curiosity and a longing to connect. She wagged her tail with pure joy – not because she expected anything, but simply because someone acknowledged her existence. In that instant, it felt like she was telling me, ‘Thank you for seeing me’.
As she came closer, she gently lifted her paws, almost offering a hug. Her mouth opened into that unmistakable doggy smile – the purest, most genuine form of happiness. And it struck me how an animal with nothing still had so much love to give.
When I told her to lie down, she obeyed instantly. No hesitation, no fear – just trust. That simple gesture touched me deeply. It was as if she was saying, ‘I trust you, even though life hasn’t always been kind to me’.
Before I left, I gave her two biscuits – a very small gesture compared to what she had given me. Her way of saying thank you was through her soft nuzzle, her wagging tail and that heart-melting smile. A beautiful moment of unspoken understanding … a moment I will carry with me forever.
And then, something hit me.
We live in a world where people walk past each other without even saying hello. We hesitate to smile at others. We don’t always check on the person living right next door. Yet here are these innocent animals – abandoned, unwanted, living in hardship – still offering love without conditions.
They don’t judge.
They don’t divide.
They don’t see status, background or class.
They simply respond to kindness with even more kindness.
If a dog can show such pure love, then what’s stopping us?
They’re silent teachers – reminding us that compassion costs nothing, but means everything.
