Charity supporters came out to play donning dinner jackets and glamorous gowns for the American Mission Hospital (AMH) Annual Gala Dinner to honour and thank the sponsors of this year’s fund-raising Island Classic Golf Tournament.
The prestigious event on Sunday was a much-appreciated conclusion of the recent three-day contest held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad at his private course in Sakhir.
AMH Corporate Chief Executive Officer Dr George Cheriyan expressed his deep gratitude to His Majesty for granting AMH the honour of hosting the tournament for 26 years and also extended appreciation to the event’s dedicated sponsors for their unwavering commitment and support.
“The Island Classic is not just a golf tournament, but a meaningful initiative that reflects AMH’s mission of service,” Dr Cheriyan said.
He highlighted that the tournament raises support for those in need, contributing directly to building a brighter and healthier future for the community of Bahrain.
He noted that through the collective efforts of sponsors, partners and participants, AMH continues to advance its charitable programmes and expand access to compassionate healthcare.
Dr Cheriyan also took the opportunity to highlight the several key milestones achieved by AMH since the opening of the King Hamad American Mission Hospital (KHAMH) in A’ali.
The inauguration on January 26, 2023, was a landmark occasion attended by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
KHAMH in A’ali has been accredited with the prestigious ‘Diamond Status’ and named a ‘Centre of Excellence for Infection Prevention and Control’ by the National Health Regulatory Authority and its senior surgeons and their teams have made headlines carrying out life-saving surgery.
One example involved saving a patient suffering from a ruptured arterial aneurysm, one of only 14 cases reported globally in the past three decades.
Medics also successfully carried out a first-of-its-kind operation on a Bahraini to remove a tumour located in the upper part of his stomach.
Its community outreach is a continuation of the legacy of the AMH pioneers who arrived in Bahrain more than 120 years ago to provide much-needed free medical care to the kingdom’s population.
The golf tournament helps cover the cost of outreach programmes assisting patients with special needs, as well as low paid workers in labour camps and those attending social centres.
During Sunday evening’s festivities, golfers of the winning teams were presented with their trophies and gifts and sponsors were honoured with mementos to thank them for their support.
Several dignitaries and high profile businessmen and corporate executives were in attendance at the event.
Julia Tovey, AMH Group CEO, added: “It is with pleasure that we welcomed our esteemed guests and recognised the golfers and sponsors who played an important role in making this event possible.
On the night they were given their due recognition and were honoured with mementos to mark the event.”
On the playing front, as reported earlier by the GDN, Team Bahrain Victorious clinched the championship flight crown in the 26th AMH Island Classic Charity Golf Tournament.
The team, consisting of His Majesty’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Mike Lorenzo, Mahdi Tadaoui and Soufiane Tadaoui, secured the title with a total of 46.2 points. In the premier flight, the Safriya team, comprising Shaikh Nasser, Mohammed Mousallam, Soufiane Tadaoui and Mahdi Tadaoui, took first place with a total of 47.1 points.
