A man has been accused of spreading false and defamatory information about Arab states.
He has been referred for trial at the Lower Criminal Court, where he will be charged with conspiracy and inciting people to rise up against their governments, the Public Prosecution said in a statement yesterday.
The case came to light after the Cybercrime Directorate received reports of interviews featuring the defendant on a television channel and social media platforms.
An investigation was launched and the authorities questioned the defendant in the presence of his lawyer. He has been provisionally detained pending further investigation.
Officials emphasised that freedom of opinion and expression is guaranteed under the Constitution, provided it does not infringe upon the unity of people, incite division, or contravene the law.
They reminded citizens and residents that broadcasting false news, provocative propaganda, and malicious rumours, as well as insulting states, are criminal acts punishable by law.
“The defendant’s actions fall outside the scope of freedom of opinion and expression, and constitute a criminal offence under the Constitution and the law,” the Public Prosecution added.
