Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa met Lord Peter Hendy, Minister of State for Rail at the Department for Transport of the UK.
The meeting discussed co-operation on railway projects, the development of modern transport systems, and future strategies to enhance Bahrain’s transport infrastructure and improve service quality.
Dr Shaikh Abdulla emphasised the longstanding ties between Bahrain and the UK, particularly in advanced transportation and infrastructure development, and highlighted the importance of expanding bilateral strategic partnerships in sustainable transport through knowledge exchange and best practices.
Dr Shaikh Abdulla also signed a memorandum of understanding between the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry and both the UK Department for Business and Trade and the Department for Transport. The MoU aims to expand partnership across several key sectors related to smart and sustainable transportation.
The MoU was signed on the UK side by Chris McDonald, Minister for Industry at the UK Department for Business and Trade, and the Minister of State for Rail.
The agreement establishes a comprehensive framework for developing modern transport systems, improving public transport efficiency, strengthening maritime and aviation partnerships, and adopting advanced technologies to support sustainability and reduce emissions.
It also includes joint knowledge exchange, capacity-building programmes, and specialised workshops to develop national expertise in planning, implementing, and managing advanced transport projects.
