The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York provided the international community with accurate information refuting the false Iranian claims contained in communications from the Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Kingdom’s Mission sent a ninth letter in its national capacity to both the United Nations Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council on March 30.
In a statement, the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations expressed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s categorical rejection, in the strongest terms, of the unjustified allegations contained in the letter dated March 18 from the Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations (S/2026/198), stressing that these allegations are false and baseless.
The statement noted that Iran’s attacks against the Kingdom of Bahrain were, and remain, unjustified. It reiterated the Kingdom of Bahrain’s full respect for the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference in the internal affairs of states, and good neighbourliness, as set out in the Charter of the United Nations. It added that despite numerous diplomatic efforts by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to avoid escalation, Iran has carried out, and continues to carry out, military operations against GCC states, including the Kingdom of Bahrain. These operations have deliberately targeted several civilian sites, including vital civilian infrastructure, civilian airports, seaports, commercial ports, essential infrastructure, energy infrastructure, oil facilities, basic food supplies, desalination plants, roads, shipping centres, residential areas, hotels, and apartment buildings.
Referring to positions expressed by the international community, the statement cited those of the GCC issued on February 28, the GCC Ministerial Council on March 1, the Arab League Ministerial Statement on March 8, the meeting of the Permanent Representatives of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to the United Nations in New York on March 5, and the GCC-EU Ministerial Meeting on March 5. It also noted that the United Nations Security Council expressed the international community’s position in Resolution 2817, adopted on March 11, which was submitted by the Kingdom of Bahrain on behalf of the GCC states and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and adopted with the support of 136 countries. The resolution condemned the attacks launched by Iran against several countries in the region, including the Kingdom of Bahrain, and stated that these acts constitute a violation of international law and a serious threat to international peace and security. It called for an immediate cessation of all attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The statement called on Iran to immediately and unconditionally cease all provocations and threats against neighbouring countries, noting that continued Iranian attacks against the Kingdom of Bahrain constitute a flagrant violation of Resolution 2817.
The statement rejected attempts by Iran to distort facts in its recent address to the United Nations, where it sought to shift responsibility for its ongoing attacks by claiming that the Kingdom of Bahrain bears international responsibility requiring compensation, including reforms, describing such claims as baseless. It reiterated the Kingdom of Bahrain’s rejection of any attempt to distort facts or evade responsibility. The statement noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran threatened the use of force on February 19, a threat rejected by GCC states, which also called for de-escalation and reaffirmed their commitment to regional and international peace and security. It added that the Kingdom of Bahrain is a victim of illegal and unjustified attacks, supported by evidence recognised by the international community, which has witnessed these attacks since February 28, including those that continued after the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2817.
Referring to Iranian aggression, the statement addressed the attack launched by Iran on the Saudi capital, Riyadh, during a meeting of foreign ministers from twelve UN member states. It emphasised that these attacks are utterly unjustifiable. The statement also noted the repeated Iranian attacks on the Kingdom of Bahrain, which resulted in loss of life and injuries among civilians, as well as significant damage to civilian facilities and vital infrastructure. These facts unequivocally confirm the deliberate and unlawful nature of these attacks, which targeted purely civilian areas and posed a direct threat to the lives and safety of civilians, constituting a clear violation of international law, specifically international humanitarian law.
In light of these ongoing attacks, which the Security Council has condemned in the strongest terms and affirmed as illegitimate, the letter reiterated the Kingdom of Bahrain’s full and legitimate right to self- defence in a manner proportionate to the nature of the threats to which the Kingdom is exposed, in accordance with Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations and within the framework of international law and in coordination with the Kingdom of Bahrain’s allies and partners. The letter stressed that the continued provision of misleading information by the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Security Council does not contribute to de-escalation, but underscores the urgent need for Iran’s full compliance with international law and Resolution 2817.
The letter called on the Security Council to condemn any attempt to justify, legitimise, or evade responsibility for such hostile acts, and to take urgent and decisive action in response to Iran’s repeated violations that undermine international law and threaten regional and international peace and security.
The address concluded by emphasising that the Kingdom of Bahrain is assessing the damage caused by the brutal Iranian aggression and will continue to keep the United Nations informed of all developments.
