VOLLEYBALL – Bahrain's senior men’s volleyball national team are set to compete in the inaugural edition of the Arab Challenge Cup, set to get underway tomorrow in Amman, Jordan.
The Bahrainis are one of six senior men’s squads taking part in the event, which is organised and run by the Arab Volleyball Association (AVA) in cooperation with the Jordan Volleyball Federation.
The nationals are joined in the tournament by their counterparts from Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine, Kuwait, and hosts Jordan.
Libya were also set to participate, but withdrew last minute, the AVA announced yesterday.
Following this, a re-draw is scheduled to take place today, which will determine the revised playing schedule.
An initial inquiry and technical meeting will also be held today.
Matches are slated to be played from tomorrow.
Bahrain, coached by Frenchman Arnaud Josserand, are fresh from winning the bronze medals at the sixth Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia held earlier this month.
Josserand has generally the same line-up as the one that competed in the Saudi capital.
The roster, which was confirmed to the GDN yesterday by the Bahrain Volleyball Association, features 14 players, including Naser Anan, Mohammed Anan, Ali Ebrahim, Mahmood Alafyah, Hassan Al Warqaa, Ayman Harwana, Abbas Al Khabbaz, Hussain Mansoor, Sayed Hashim Issa, Mahmoud Abdulwahed, Mohammed Abdulla, Sayed Mohammed Jawad, Hani Alawi, Mahmood Abdulhussain.
Bahrain’s senior men’s volleyball team will be aiming to become the first-ever champions in the Arab Challenge Cup.
The tournament is being held after the historic recognition of the AVA by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), which was announced in September of this year with the support of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC).
The kingdom’s senior men’s volleyball national team will also be looking to continue their recent run of impressive results over the past year, which include their Islamic Solidarity Games bronze medal; their silver medal in the first West Asia Volleyball Association Men’s Volleyball Championship, held at home in July; their historic gold in the AVC Men’s Volleyball Nations Cup 2025, also in Bahrain held in June – Bahrain’s first-ever crown in any AVC competition; and their title triumph in the 23rd Arab Men’s Volleyball Championship, also hosted by the kingdom in November of last year.
