TENNIS – Petr Bar Biryukov from Russia and Alexandr Binda from Italy were last night crowned men’s doubles champions in the Manama Challenger, currently being played at the Public Security Officers Club in Gudaibiya.
Bar Biryukov and Binda secured their title after defeating the Russian tandem of Ilia Simakin and Egor Agafonov 7-5, 6-1 in their final.
Following the match, the two pairings were presented their respective trophies in an awarding ceremony attended by Bahrain Tennis Federation vice-president Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa and other officials.
Meanwhile, Simakin booked his spot yesterday in the men’s singles title-decider where he will take on Briton Toby Samuel.
Second-seeded Simakin needed to fight back from a set down to oust sixth seed Petr Brunclik from Czechia 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 to advance.
Samuel, meanwhile, defeated Frenchman Matisse Bobichon 6-3, 6-2 to go through.
The final is scheduled to be played today on the concluding day of the tournament, scheduled for a 3pm start.
The Manama Challenger is a category 50 competition that is part of this year’s ATP Challenger Tour calendar.
It features top professional players from around the world who are vying for a share of the $60,000 in total prize money.
