FOOTBALL – SAUDI Arabia defeated Comoros to reach the Fifa Arab Cup quarter-finals yesterday, while Morocco are on course to follow after drawing with Oman.
In a match of precious few opportunities, ten-man Morocco played out a scoreless draw with Oman in Al Rayyan to slip to second in the Group B standings. In the evening’s late match, Saudi Arabia defeated tournament debutants Comoros 3-1 to move top the table and secure their place in the knockout rounds.
Mohamed Kanno scored a brilliant brace as Saudi Arabia secured their spot in the knockout rounds. Comoros squandered a glorious chance to open the scoring in the 20th minute when Affane Said Djambae guided a header wide of the post with the goal at his mercy.
They would rue that opportunity as Saudi Arabia took the lead deep into first-half stoppage time when, after a mistake by Comoros goalkeeper Adel Anzimati, the mercurial Salem Al Dawsari crossed the ball to Kanno who headed home in style.
The star duo then combined for Saudi Arabia’s second goal in the 51st minute when Kanno converted Al Dawsari’s centre.
Comoros gave themselves hope when Ibroihim Djoudja scored from close range in the 63rd minute but Al Dawsari secured the victory with a brilliant individual effort.
