A Gulf national has been sentenced to two years in prison after authorities uncovered his pornographic social media page.
The Lower Criminal Court yesterday convicted the defendant of violating public morals, committing an obscene act, and using offensive language in public.
He was also fined BD1,000 for possessing and sharing obscene videos with the intent to distribute, as well as for storing pornography on a digital device.
In addition, the judge ordered the confiscation of the man’s phone and ruled that he be permanently deported from Bahrain upon completion of his sentence.
Authorities were alerted to the man’s activities after a Bahraini citizen filed a complaint, accusing him of insulting and using profanities against him on social media.
Upon reviewing his account, investigators discovered that he regularly posted clips violating public morals.
The case was referred to the Public Prosecution, which issued an arrest warrant.
During questioning, the defendant admitted to filming and sharing the videos online. Forensic experts examined his electronic devices and confirmed they contained the same clips posted on his social media page.
The Public Prosecution ordered the removal of the videos and referred the case to court.
In a statement, the Anti-Cybercrime Prosecution head called for responsible use of social media platforms, emphasising that they should not be misused to publish or spread content that violates local social norms.
“Cyberspaces are not exempt from the rule of law – the same rules apply online,” the official stated, adding that authorities will continue to take necessary measures to safeguard digital spaces and hold accountable those who misuse them.
