Message by Ambassador Asako Okai
On the occasion of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito’s 66th birthday, I celebrate the enduring friendship between Japan and Bahrain, rooted in history, trust and shared innovation.
The landmark visit by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to Japan in September 2025 marked a defining moment in our relationship.
His Royal Highness’s meetings with Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress and Japan’s leadership, along with Bahrain’s National Day celebration at Osaka Kansai Expo, powerfully signalled our deepening strategic partnership.
Beginning with the crude oil trade in 1934, our bond has grown into a comprehensive alliance across politics, global challenges, security, innovation, education, space, archaeology and culture.
Japan continues supporting Bahrain’s sustainable development – from the Daiki Aluminium-Alba joint venture in sustainable aluminium to advancing e-government through co-operation between Japan’s Digital Agency and Bahrain’s Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA), and expanding space collaboration between Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the Bahrain Space Agency.
Japanese business interest in Bahrain as a gateway to the GCC is rising across Information Technology (IT), entertainment, hospitality and food sectors. We are working towards direct flights that will transform business, tourism and people-to-people connections.
We are investing in youth through educational exchanges, internships with Japanese game studios and IT firms via Tamkeen, and skills development programmes.
Japan deeply values Bahrain’s leadership in fostering regional dialogue and its commitment to peace and stability. We look forward to continued growth of our Strategic Partnership for mutual prosperity.
