American and British news outlets always create the impression that everyone is heading for the airport at the slightest hint of trouble in any country. The same mentality that reports how many British or American tourists die in a tragedy ignoring the deaths of thousands of locals.

During the protest problems, a certain TV journalist told that a pro-government march was going on nearby, declined to go, choosing instead a small demonstration that fitted the perception they wished to give.
On another occasion, I was recruiting staff in London. Page 2 of the Times had a headline that said Bahrain was on fire! I phoned immediately and my PA looked out the window and said ‘not that I can see!’.
It was a completely false headline that worried relatives of expats. I was also present in both Gulf wars – the media were no different.
