A security guard was sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined BD10,000 for importing nearly half a kilo of cannabis on a flight arriving from Delhi.
The 30-year-old Indian expatriate was found guilty of possessing narcotics with the intention to sell them, and also possessing morphine and pregabalin for recreational use.
The High Criminal Court heard that the man brought 78 red-coloured bags, each containing a ‘dark piece’ or chunk of hashish, weighing a total of 417gm.
An airport customs officer testified that in October, when he was scanning incoming luggage, he detected ‘suspicious’ items in what turned out to be the defendant’s suitcase.
During the search, quantities of hashish were found. The defendant admitted that he had brought the drugs over to Bahrain in order to pass on to a team of dealers willing to promote and sell the narcotics for profit.
A test of the defendant’s urine revealed that he had been using morphine and pregabalin (Lyrica).
