PARLIAMENT First Deputy Speaker Abdulnabi Salman highlighted Bahrain’s support for environmental innovation and youth empowerment to develop sustainable solutions that enhance resilience to climate change.
Speaking at the fifth conference of the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement, held in Istanbul on the sidelines of the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), he emphasised the importance of strengthening international co-operation to address climate impacts, including support for developing countries through financing, technology transfer, capacity building, and ensuring climate justice.
Mr Salman noted that Bahrain’s development approach is guided by the vision of His Majesty King Hamad, based on institutional development and the promotion of peace, tolerance, and openness, while maintaining an active role in supporting international peace and building regional and global partnerships.
He added that Bahrain continues its development process under the leadership of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, through economic modernisation programmes, improved government performance, and sustainable development initiatives, with a focus on empowering Bahraini youth.
Mr Salman said that climate change has become a developmental and humanitarian issue affecting cities, quality of life, and societal stability, underscoring the need for stronger parliamentary roles through legislation, oversight, and co-ordination with governments to support sustainable urban planning, clean energy transition, efficient resource management, and infrastructure protection.
He highlighted the role of the Non-Aligned Movement in promoting international co-operation and noted that its parliamentary network contributes to strengthening parliamentary diplomacy and supporting global efforts towards security, stability, and sustainable development.
Mr Salman affirmed Bahrain’s commitment to international co-operation in line with the United Nations Charter and international law, stressing the importance of collective action to support global stability and sustainable development.
He outlined Bahrain’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability through policies to reduce carbon emissions, expand renewable energy, improve resource efficiency, support the green economy, protect marine environments, and strengthen sustainable infrastructure.
Mr Salman reiterated Bahrain’s support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and the need for a just and comprehensive solution based on international resolutions and the two-state solution, while stressing the importance of safeguarding the security and stability of Bahrain and GCC countries and rejecting threats to state sovereignty.
He emphasised the importance of parliamentary co-operation to adopt legislation, strengthen oversight, expand international partnerships, and exchange expertise to enhance cities’ resilience to climate change.
Bahrain was represented at the meeting by Shura Council First Deputy Chairman Jamal Fakhro and Parliament member Dr Mahdi Al Showaikh.
