TENNIS – BAHRAIN’S Yousif Kamal secured back-to-back boys’ singles titles after winning the second week of the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) Bahrain 14-and-Under Championship 2026, which came to a close at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hard courts in Isa Town.
Yousif became the first-ever Bahraini player last week to be crowned a champion of an ATF youth tournament, and has now come away with an impressive second successive gold medal.
Third-seeded Yousif once again upset top seed Elyas Algafli from Saudi Arabia in their division final. He was leading 4-2 in the first set when Elyas was forced to retire.
Meanwhile, Elyas and Jordanian partner Awni Qubti bagged the boys’ doubles title after defeating Yousif and Omar Hashem, also from Jordan, in their title-deciding clash.
Elyas got his revenge against Yousif as he and Awni took the match 6-2, 6-0.
On the distaff, Uchechukwu Uzokwe from Nigeria was the star of the girls’ competitions, securing an impressive double by clinching both the girls’ singles and girls’ doubles crowns.
In the singles, Uchechukwu defeated Almaha Faqeeh of Bahrain 6-0, 6-2 in their final. Uchechukwu then teamed up with her sister Chinemerem Uzokwe, who is representing the US, to capture their doubles title following a hard-earned 6-2, 4-6, 10-3 win against top seeds Rajeswari Rachabattuni from India and Talya Al Busaidi of Oman.
Uchechukwu and Chinemerem therefore completed a successful couple of weeks in the kingdom, having also won the girls’ singles crown in the opening tournament.
At the end of all the action, the winners of the various categories were presented their respective medals by BTF president Shaikh Abdulaziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, BTF secretary general Fuad Al Rowaie, the championship’s general referee Ahmed Al Hawaj, and other officials.
Following the completion of the successive ATF under-14 events, play is scheduled to go up a notch as the BTF hosts a pair of ATF Bahrain 16 and Under Championships – the first of which got underway yesterday with qualifying draw action and then next to be held from Saturday to November 6.
