It was not surprising to see Mr P V Radhakrishna Pillai re-elected as Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam (BKS) president. We have all seen, heard and read about his leadership skills and initiatives in taking the club to a new level over the last few years. Moreover, he is highly revered and respected within the community for his selfless service to people in need, giving his time and resources helping others in most trying circumstances including during the recent geopolitical situation in Bahrain. Hearty congratulations and more power to Mr Pillai.
Having said that, I was a bit taken aback to see the photograph of 11 people, all men, smiling bright in bespoke suits. It looked like a committee for a ‘Gentlemen’s club’.
Whatever happened to the women of BKS? I know the club has many talented, sharp, accomplished female leaders. Inclusivity, equality and diversity is the need of the hour, whether it’s at the workplace, social club, politics or any setting.
A female voice can be transforming, shaping club policies, organising educational and skill building workshops with a focus on financial literacy, family values, wellness programmes et al as well as advocating change. I do hope the current committee will consider encouraging and/or mentoring the lovely ladies of BKS to take on top leadership roles, in the future.
I am aware BKS has a women’s wing which is exclusively for women centric activities and families. In any case women have already excelled in every sphere at the top of the pyramid so, let’s create a wholesome future where the leadership reflects the full strength, talent and diversity of the community. Hey, and a bit of colour may do us good too.
