Even now, it is hard to explain to anyone – especially to our anxious family and friends around the world – that although Bahrain was heavily attacked and locked inside a war zone, life in the kingdom has largely remained unaffected.
In fact, in many ways, it may have been better than for those living beyond the Strait of Hormuz.
Truthfully, the first few blasts and the dark smoke rising into the sky shocked us. It was a moment of profound disbelief and disorientation. At every warning siren and every blast, only one question kept ringing in our minds: Why would anyone want to attack this oasis of peace?
However, the government sprang into action immediately and, within just a couple of days, Bahrain began returning to normal, with a few easy-to-follow safety protocols and precautionary measures in place.
Under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Hamad, the government has done – and continues to do – an exemplary job in managing this extraordinary situation with maturity, compassion and swiftness. No effort or means were spared to protect the lives of all citizens, residents and visitors, despite being under heavy attack.
Moreover, the steps taken by the government displayed rare sagacity and successfully averted mass hysteria, panic or undue anxiety among the people. Confidence in the leadership was clearly evident, as there was no large-scale exodus, withdrawal of investments or capital flight.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, took the initiative to personally inspect hypermarkets, ensuring that all essential goods were adequately stocked and that prices were maintained at pre-conflict levels.
Malls, shopping complexes, cafés, restaurants, hospitals, pet shops and other establishments have remained open. Supermarkets have consistently been well stocked, and no one ever felt the need to hoard food or supplies. Even during Ramadan, people adapted responsibly, followed the guidelines and continued their religious, social and professional lives – with minor adjustments such as working from home, much like during the pandemic.
Once again, Bahrain has displayed immense maturity, tolerance and self-restraint in the face of irrational aggression. Despite enduring the persistent ravages of war and constant provocations, the kingdom has steadfastly remained on its chosen path of peace, tolerance and harmony.
I asked some Bahrainis: What is the secret of this uniqueness? They all gave the same answer: Bahrain is an ancient civilisation and has acquired wisdom deeply rooted in its people and culture.
Indeed, throughout its long history, Bahrain has faced many challenges. Yet none have ever succeeded in conquering or extinguishing the “spirit of Bahrain” within its people.
War will end, claims will be made, but Bahrain will shake off the dust and rise again – forgiving, loving and extending peace to both friends and foes in this turbulent world.
May the Almighty bless this kingdom abundantly.
