I am not in favour of the annual summer work ban being imposed on outdoor workers.
I worked outdoors for many years, as a car washer (500 fils per car), mechanic, and construction company owner. Occasionally it would be too hot, mostly it was the humidity, and the workers would ask to stop and go home. Of course this was always granted, and actually this happened only twice in 40 years.
I refer to the article in the GDN, ‘Call to extend annual mid-day work ban to three full months’, published on May 7.
I surveyed our workers, 297 at the time the work ban was first planned, and not one worker wanted the work ban.
So, please, stop this work ban matter, workers and companies can easily deal with an environment that is too hot, cold, humid, windy, or whatever.
The people that want the work ban have great intentions, but, please, have they asked the workers what they want? To work at night, in the dark? As an Industrial Engineer, I have studied workers and the human body, night is for rest, as the Quran so wisely states, and most accidents are at night.
This is a matter of health and prosperity. People need justice, not charity!
Company owners are hardworking, industrious and humanitarians at heart. Migrant workers should not come to Bahrain to work if they have health issues. Bahrain has a harsh climate, we all know this, and only healthy workers should be permitted to come and work in this harsh climate.
I hope that the work ban is completely rescinded and our government inspectors can be spared this unnecessary, expensive chore, of inspections.
I say this in respect to the hard working people that built Bahrain, my father, grandfather included, ahamdulailah.
