Bahrain's senior men’s volleyball national team take on their counterparts from Oman today to kick start their medal bid in the fourth GCC Games, in Doha, Qatar.
The nationals are set to play three games in the preliminary round of their tournament at Aspire Women’s Sports Hall in the Qatari capital.
Their opening assignment today against the Omanis is scheduled for a 4pm start, Bahrain time.
Bahrain’s newly appointed head coach Ivan Joksimovic from Montenegro, who was signed by the Bahrain Volleyball Association earlier this month to take over for the departed Arnaud Josserand from France, has a 12-player squad in Doha.
They include Hasan Alwarqaa, Ali Habib, Mahmoud Abdulwahed, Abbas Abdulla, Mahmood Alafyah, Sayed Hashim Issa, Mohammed Jassim, Mahmoud Abdelhussain, Hassan Al Shakhouri, Ayman Harouna, Ali Ebrahim and Abdullah Mohammed Jaafar.
The GCC Games mark Joksimovic’s first competition in charge of the kingdom’s senior men’s squad
Following their contest today, the Bahrainis take on the UAE tomorrow at 4pm and then face off with Qatar on Tuesday at 6.30pm.
Both times are Bahrain.
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait were also scheduled to participate in men’s volleyball but had withdrawn.
The kingdom’s spikers are aiming to continue their fine run in men’s volleyball from past editions of the GCC Games.
They were the silver-medallists in the previous GCC Games held in Kuwait City in 2022, when Qatar took gold and Oman won the bronze medals.
Prior to that, Bahrain were back-to-back champions from the event’s two earlier editions in Dammam, Saudi Arabia in 2015, and in the inaugural GCC Games held at home in 2011.
