Bahrain has strongly condemned new Iranian aggression after Gulf tensions flared again with fresh attacks on the kingdom and Kuwait.
The Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) General Command said yesterday that its air defence systems succeeded in intercepting and destroying three missiles and several drones.
One person was killed and many were injured, however, when Kuwait International Airport was targeted by the same Iranian aggression.
“Iran continues its systematic hostile approach through its criminal attacks using missiles and drones targeting civilian sites in Bahrain,” the BDF General Command added.
It affirmed its firm resolve that all its arms and units are at the highest levels of readiness and defensive preparedness to protect the kingdom.
It urged the public to exercise caution regarding any unfamiliar or suspicious objects resulting from attacks, and to avoid approaching or handling them, and report them immediately.
The BDF affirmed that personnel of the Royal Field Engineering Unit remain fully prepared to safely deal with debris, ensuring the safety of all citizens and residents.
The Foreign Ministry also expressed the kingdom’s strong condemnation of the continued Iranian attacks on Kuwait, targeting civilian and vital facilities, including airport and diplomatic missions.
The ministry said the attacks constitute a dangerous escalation that threatens regional security and stability, a blatant violation of the sovereignty of Kuwait, a clear violation of the rules of international law, the UN Charter and the principles of good neighbourliness.
It affirmed Bahrain’s full solidarity with Kuwait and its complete support for the legitimate measures it is taking to preserve its sovereignty, security and the safety of its citizens and residents on its territory.
Further condemnation of the latest attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait was widely conveyed by all Gulf states.
GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Al Budaiwi called for a ‘firm international stance to put an end to these dangerous Iranian aggressive practices’.
He underscored that the security of Bahrain and Kuwait remained an ‘integral part’ of the security of the GCC states, and that GCC member states stood ‘united’ in confronting the attacks.
And, US military carried out strikes near the Strait of Hormuz, with diplomacy to halt the war showing little sign of progress.
The incidents are the latest to test a shaky ceasefire, sending oil prices up more than two per cent, as the strait remains largely closed more than three months after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran.
Flights at Kuwait International Airport were suspended after Iranian drones and missiles damaged airport facilities and diplomatic missions, killing one person and injuring more than 60 others, Kuwaiti authorities and state media announced.
Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways later resumed flights after taking safety measures, the civil aviation authority said.
CENTCOM said it had carried out a new round of ‘defensive strikes’ in southern Iran, targeted missile launch sites and Iranian boats seeking to lay mines, and conducted strikes on Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz after attempted Iranian attacks.
Since the US and Israel began strikes on Iran on February 28, Tehran has repeatedly attacked targets in the Gulf region.
Since mid-March, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he is close to a deal to end the fighting and pave the way for negotiations on thorny issues including the future of Iran’s nuclear programme.
