BASKETBALL – LENGTHY suspensions and fines amounting to BD3,700 in total were handed out yesterday by the Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA) to Al Ahli and Manama, along with a number of their club members and players from their respective youth teams.
This follows the melee that took place during the final of the Khalid Bin Hamad Golden Generation Under-18 Basketball League, played last week at BBA Arena in Um Al Hassam Sports Complex and narrowly won by Ahli 70-68.
The BBA said in a post on social media yesterday that, following a review of the referees’ and competitions committee’s reports and video recordings of the incident, the BBA disciplinary committee decided to issue the series of penalties.
These include the ban of a full season for seven members from both clubs, while Ahli and Manama were fined BD500 apiece.
Meanwhile, five Ahli players were also penalised. A 10-game suspension and BD1,000 fine were given to the pair of Daniel Mohamed Abdulhussain and Hussain Ali Ebrahim. A five-game suspension and BD300 fine were handed to Yousef Ali Ebrahim and Hassan Ali Ebrahim, while a two-game suspension and BD100 fine was given to Hassan Hussain Mohammed.
For Manama, six players were punished. The duo of Ali Abdulhameed and Fares Mohammed were given a 10-game suspension and a BD1,000 fine, while a five-game suspension and BD300 fine were handed to the group of Ali Yasser, Mohammed Adel, Ali Hani Alam, and Ehsan Abdulredha.
A BBA official clarified last night that the fine amounts were collective and not individual, where applicable.
Meanwhile, media members from both clubs were also given suspensions for a full campaign.
Following the incident in the final, both Ahli and Manama issued statements earlier this week expressing their regret for what happened, and emphasised their rejection of such actions, which they said do not reflect the values of sport.
