The region has witnessed in recent months the repercussions of Iran’s treacherous attacks on the GCC countries and Jordan, using missiles and drones and targeting civilian facilities and residential areas in blatant violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani has said.
He pointed out the worsening consequences of Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which disrupted navigation, undermined global economy, and left around 20,000 seafarers stranded away from their families.
Chairing the 165th regular session of the Arab League Ministerial Council, held yesterday in Amman, Jordan, he said that the Arab countries had welcomed the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran to end the war. He added that the deal was a positive step towards de-escalation and reaching a comprehensive agreement.
Dr Al Zayani emphasised the importance of respecting the sovereignty of the countries in the region, protecting freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2817, and addressing all issues that threaten the security of Arab states.
The minister also commended the efforts of US President Donald Trump and his determination to establish peace and stability in the region in co-operation with its leaders. He also praised the mediation efforts of Pakistan and Qatar in supporting dialogue and peaceful initiatives.
