Jordan is mourning the death of a young football fan who died in a stampede during a crowded public screening in central Amman to watch Jordan's World Cup match against Algeria early on Tuesday.
Zaid Yousef Al-Damasi, 15, sustained critical injuries in a crowd crush caused by heavy congestion and sudden crowd movement at the Roman Theatre in Hashemite Square. He later died in hospital.
Roya News reported that the boy lay unidentified for hours at the National Centre for Forensic Medicine because he was not carrying a wallet or identity cards.
His father, Youssef Al-Damasi, had spent hours praying for the family of the unidentified teenager after hearing news of the tragedy, completely unaware that the victim was his own son.
"We've been praying for him since morning, and we didn't know he was our son... it turns out he was my son," he told local media.
Al-Damasi was a student at Al-Nizamiyah Private School, which described him as a "student known for his good character and upright conduct" in a statement released after the tragedy.
The Jordan Football Association has expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.
